This paper seeks to analyse a distinct feature of the pontificate of one of the greatest popes th... more This paper seeks to analyse a distinct feature of the pontificate of one of the greatest popes the Church of Rome has had, Gregory the Great, meaning his views on and his contacts with Eastern church traditions and their influence and presence in Rome and Italy during his times, almost half a century since Emperor Justinian's reconquest of the peninsula. Drawing on information from both western and eastern sources, and in particular his letters and other writtings, which contain details shedding light on the situation in Rome at the close of the VIth century, we argue that, although Gregory was adamant in defending the privileges and rites of the Roman Church, and was also one of the last popes of senatorial origin and classical latin upbringing, he was not indiferrent to, or necessarily against, eastern influences in the Roman Church, taking a balanced path which tried to integrate those which did not directly contradict the customs of his church
