    Early Career[]

    Born Bernice Reed in Springfield, Ohio, she graduated from South High and appeared in productions of Hair, Chicago, and Eubie.[2] At the start of her career, she appeared as a Jet magazine cover girl, and was known to her friends as Tiny.[3]

    In 1972, Reed appeared as a regular player in the New York City nightclub Reno Sweeney which also featured Melissa Manchester, Marvin Hamlisch, Marilyn Sokol, Howard Ashman, and Alan Menken.[4] In 1974, she played the part of Lucy (in the Sky with Diamonds) in John Lennon's short-lived stage musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on the Road. She returned to Reno Sweeney the following year performing songs she'd co-written with Cheryl Hardwick, who would later go on to write songs for Sesame Street.[5]

    In the mid-1960s, Reed attended Kent State University where she was active in many stage productions at KSU's E. Turner Stump Theater. These included The Streets of New York, It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman! and The Tragedy of Tragedies — The Life and Death of Tom Thumb The Great.
