HGTV pilot has Erie ties
Ann Markley Branca, raised in Millcreek, is making a mark on HGTV.
She and her husband, Colin, starred in "Bigger is Better," a pilot HGTV ran on Aug. 16 at 1 p.m. "We got great ratings," she said during a telephone interview while driving from her home in Bucks County with her kids to Erie for a weekend visit. The premise of the show is that the Brancas take a smallish, historic home and double or even triple its square footage. "We open it up and that alone makes it seem bigger," she said.
In the pilot, the couple removed an old porch, took out walls and did additional work. "I love the demolition," she said. "It's like peeling an onion so you can see what you've got. Obviously, we don't do everything. We work with architects and contractors, but we're doing the work, too."
A production company approached the Brancas with the idea for the show in 2017, and the couple agreed. They started shooting last year and now that the pilot aired, they're waiting to hear what the next step is. "HGTV might air the pilot again, or we might go straight to production," she said.
