He played a role in the competitive selection of the University of Miami as one of four centers for the National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Hispanic Community Health Study- (HCHS-SOL), which is the largest population-based multi-disciplinary epidemiologic study ever undertaken in US Latinos. He currently serves as a co-Principal investigator for SOL OJOS, an HCHS-SOL ancillary study that is documenting the prevalence and risk factor associations for major eye diseases.
