Russell Stuart Cedric Clark (27 August 1905 – 29 July 1966) was a New Zealand artist, illustrator, sculptor and university lecturer.[1]
Early life
[edit]Clark was born in Christchurch on 27 August 1905 into a family with a strong interest in art.[2] His mother was recognised as a person with a sophisticated sense of colour and his father, a plumber and tinsmith, was an accomplished watercolourist. At an early age Clark was already known to be creating his own cartoons.[3] After attending the Christchurch Boys' High School he went on to study at the Canterbury College School of Art from 1922 to 1928.[4] an

Russell Clark was a well-known teacher and choreographer in Hollywood, California. A Philadelphia native, he was the son of celebrated tap dancer Steve Clark of the Clark Brothers. Russell’s choreography graced numerous films, television programs, music videos and commercials for more than 25 years. Just a few of his choreography credits include The Banger Sisters, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Blade Runner and Major Payne. He coached such actors as Denzel Washington, Jeff Bridges, Angela Bassett, Halle Berry and Whoopi Goldberg for their feature film roles. In the 1980s, Russell became one of the most in-demand working choreographers, with videos for such recording artists as Gloria Estefan, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Herbie Hancock. In 2002 the American Choreography Awards recognized Russell with the prestigious Governors’ Award for his contributions to choreography for the camera. Above all else, Russell Clark was a teacher who gave of his talent and wisdom to generations of students.
