After studying film and photography at SFAI, UC Santa Cruz and UCLA Motion Picture & Television Dept., cross-disciplinary artist Elizabeth Lennard worked on writer, Marguerite Duras’ movies. It was only in 2014, that she exhibited her photographic series: “Duras Films” at the Ervin Szabo Library in Budapest, Hungary. The Pompidou Center in Paris presented a solo show of Lennard’s color-altered photographs “Painted New York” in 1979 and in several group shows, most recently “Unbearable Lightness of the 1980s” in 2018. Lennard collaborated with French writer Danielle Mémoire to create “Pour faire une cordelière”, a video-performance part of “Rosebud” at Pompidou Center’s “New Festival” in 2009. Gallery shows include Thackerey & Robertson in San Francisco, Les Filles de Calvaire, Marie Victoire Poliakoff Pixi and Gilles Peyroulet & Cie in Paris. Group shows where Lennard’s work was featured include: “Hand-Painted Photographs” at the De Sasset Museum in Santa Clara, California and “Recycling Art History” at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. In 2019 she was one of three photographers featured in “Public Art, Public Memory Who is Missing” at Kranzberg Art Center – Gallery, Saint Louis, Missouri.

One can not imagine two cities more antagonistic than Paris and New York. Paris, with its Haussmanian structure still intact, breathes the past at every corner. To the delight of the nostalgic stroller. In New York, the pace is different. No question of crossing the street unexpectedly. The head in the clouds, carried by the feeling of advancing in a futuristic landscape, the walker is driven by the current of city dwellers in a hurry. New York is grand, breathtaking, while Paris charms sensibilities with its timeless beauty. It is perhaps in this striking contrast between past and future, picturesque and modern, curved lines and straight lines, strength and beauty, that lies the secret of the mutual fascination of New Yorkers and Parisians.
